I never use them anymore as they don’t fit my style (and I don’t really get booked for open format mixing anymore) but they were a lifesaver back when I had to.įinally, you can just do what the transition tracks do when they make them which is essentially to get to a part of the song that suits an abrupt tempo change, use some effects or a backspin to build tension and highlight something is about to happen, then start the other track on a pre chosen cue point that lets you jump right into the song, usually a bar or so before the drop or at the start of the drop or high energy/everyone knows this part of the next song. A lot of times though these aren’t quantized the best so keep that in mind. If you check DJ pools they usually have a good amount, and it’s just a track recorded with the start at 80 and the ending part at 120. If it’s something a little weirder like 80 to 120 where you can’t really pitch it up or down to meet, you can get special DJ tracks called transition tracks (at least I know them as that).

Only difference between the two is that one full bar at 140 fits into half of a bar at 70. Impossible right? Actually, it’s the same bpm with the 70 just being half of the 140 so you can mix them together. Now let’s say you have one at 70 and one at 140. CDJs and controllers have more flexibility when it comes to changing bpm so give it a test run and see. Or you can go up 7 on one, down 3 on the other. Just move the one playing down slowly preferably on a non vocal section so people don’t notice as much. If a track is 130 and you want to get to 120, you can go down 5 on the 130 and up 5 on the 120. The slower the bpm the more the chance stands out especially with vocals and higher notes. The general rule is you shouldn’t go past 5 BPM but that really applies more to vinyl and hip hop. Just try out some stuff - I’m sure you’ll find your own way to do this. Seriously, nothing more painful than watching a dancefloor empty after a screw-up. Not the pinnacle of mixing, but 100x better than a screwed up transition. Just let the song finish or fade out yourself. Sometimes you don’t have time / you screwed up the prep or just draw a blank. A cappella’s allow for bigger delta’s in bpm without being obvious. In an instrumental part, start an a cappella, change the tempo (with keylock), and mix in the new song. Looping a section of the new track (easier, as you can adjust) or current track (harder, as the loop must be perfect) and add some effects while changing the tempo. Only really works if the new track starts with a drop or is instantly recognizable (Usher - Yeah, or Summer of ‘69 if you’re playing at a wedding ) ) Again, tracks need to be suited for this.Įcho/bitcrush/reverb/brake/backspin/keylocked slowdown to “muddy it out” + start of new track just before it gets annoying. Works well, but kills the dancefloor if you get this wrong.
